Faith with Purpose is an annual speaker event hosted by the Department of Religion at Berea College. Each year, we invite a compelling guest to campus to explore how deeply held beliefs (religious, ethical, or philosophical) can guide meaningful lives and purposeful action in the world.
Rooted in Berea College’s Great Commitments, this event reflects a shared vision of education as more than academic achievement. It is an invitation to connect learning with service, conviction with action, and personal values with the pursuit of a more just, inclusive, and compassionate world. Faith with Purpose is not about promoting a single tradition or prescribing what to believe. Instead, it creates space for a deeper question: What happens when faith becomes something you live out, through your work, your relationships, and your engagement with the world?
Our speakers come from diverse fields (activism, science, business, the arts, ministry, and community leadership) but they share a common thread: their commitments have shaped real choices, often in moments that required courage, clarity, and resilience. Their stories invite us to consider how belief can inform action in response to challenges such as inequality, environmental crisis, and the work of building strong, sustainable communities. Each year, the event engages questions that reflect both personal formation and Berea’s broader mission:
How do you begin to discern a sense of purpose, and how does that evolve over time?
How might your beliefs shape your future career, leadership, and contributions to society?
What does it mean to take seriously the call to care for others and confront systems of inequality?
What sustains individuals and communities in the ongoing work of change?

It encourages you to think critically about your own values and to imagine how your education at Berea can prepare you not only for a career, but for a life of purpose.
